Well, it's Wednesday, September 10, 2008, 9:13 AM GMT+2. The Large Hadron Collider at CERN is supposedly in operation right now. The world is still here. Amazing, isn't it!
There is an anti-science sentiment growing in the United States and around the world. We will be writing more about that in the future.
For now, life is good and we're all still here!
On a personal note, wow I would hate to be one of the extremists who believed we were going to be sucked into a black hole right now...
Digg for doomsday!

This is a sad article to write, and tough. The Huffington Post is generally a decent site, a good source of news and opinions for the liberal, with some very high profile, well known Democrat writers. We at nationofcriminals.com like them so much they're linked from our side bar.
Yet there are several problems with HuffPost's comment system. There is a severe limit to the number of words per post. On popular stories, comments fly from comment page 1 to page 10 before you can target the word "next" with your mouse. Therefore, the good comments get lost quickly and no deep discussion really happens. Is anyone really going to read 26 pages of comments unless they're looking for something they posted themselves?

Representative Nancy Pelosi, well known for her unpopular stance against the impeachment of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, is sending unsolicited emails. After signing a petition at democrats.com to ask Nancy explicitly to change her position on holding impeachment hearings, nationofcriminals.com was signed up and now receives regular emails from the Pelosi campaign.

John McCain is using an old trick of the software sales industry called FUD. It stands for "Fear, uncertainty, doubt" and was used very effectively by software salesmen in the 80s and 90s and the early part of this century to drive software sales.
The basic idea is to instill the fear of failure into decision makers. A typical sales pitch is punctuated with lines like "take the safe route", and "nobody ever got fired for choosing Microsoft". These are euphemisms for "you will fail and get fired if you go with the rival company".
So, the steps to a really good FUD campaign are:

In 1974 Mel Brooks brought us one of the funniest movies ever made. You can watch Blazing Saddles again and again and even to day, 34 years later, it still remains as poignant and funny as ever. In one of the most classic scenes, Hedley Lamarr (the Governors lackey, played by Harvey Korman) has sent a black sheriff (Sheriff Bart, played by Cleavon Little) to Rock Ridge in an attempt to drive the townspeople away.

While the big debates focus on the economy and the war, another freedom will be taken away if McCain has his way: a woman's right to choose. Senator McCain plans on robbing women of their right to control their own reproductive health. He clearly states his goals of overturning Roe vs. Wade and returning control of this issue to the state. If this wasn't bad enough, he is dedicated to ending abortion.
Not only does this undermine the freedom of choice that we hold dear, it doesn't address victims of rape and sexual abuse. His focus is instead of adoption, a solution that puts the burden on the expectant mother to carry an unwanted child to term. Not only is this not feasible for all women, it is also an expensive undertaking with pre-natal care and medical costs.

John McCain and George W. Bush assert that "the surge is working", citing reduced violence in Iraq as proof. The other way to spin this is "we're winning!". Hurray for us! This argument is a distraction.
Let's say you break a pair of eye glasses. You then put a piece of electricians tape around the bridge, wear them to work and tell everyone how great your solution is working and how proud you are. This is exactly what anyone who says "the surge is working" is saying to you. We made a terrible mistake. Lots of people died. We "fixed" it by sending a huge number of additional troops.
John McCain has no plan to reduce troops in Iraq even though:

Congress has passed a horribly ill-conceived piece of legislation at breakneck speed today. H.R. 6304 is a disaster of legislation. They have slapped the American public across the face, handed the FISA court an impossible task, and commit thousands or maybe millions of crimes per day in the process. We have all heard about the immunity clauses but let's look closer at the rest of it and where we're heading.

McCain's and Obama's campaigns are all about words. Words with the power to move people. The only problem is, a large percentage of the words coming from McCain's campaign are bald-faced lies. Dangerous and powerful words that stand a very good chance of contributing to the decline of our great country.
It has become obvious in recent years that a catchy headline and strong imagery are all that is necessary to paint someone as a hero or a villain. It doesn't even matter if the statement and imagery are true to achieve the desired effect. A grain of truth and a good catch-phrase are all that is needed. It doesn't make any difference if the kernel of truth is directly contradicted by the catch-phrase.

As noted in our own mission statement, one of the main purposes of nationofcriminals.com is to assemble various bits of information that the news media only supplies in short bursts, painting a larger picture of what is happening. Vincent Bugliosi is a complete master at this. This man prosecuted Charles Manson and has written several bestselling books about the Manson case, the Kennedy assassination, and Ken Starr and the Clinton impeachment. This man knows how to make a strong legal case.

With so much focus on Iraq, energy concerns and the economy, there has been hardly any mention of Mr. McCain's completely unworkable education policy. Time to correct the record. As of July second 2008, the main plan is anarchy.
John McCain believes American education must be worthy of the promise we make to our children and ourselves. He understands that we are a nation committed to equal opportunity, and there is no equal opportunity without equal access to excellent education.
Good start. Read More

The future looks bleak. Senators Obama and McCain have both agreed to support H.R. 6304 (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978). Baring some miracle, this bill is not going to be defeated. Senator McCain's position on this matter has long been clear: surveillance will continue. Senator Obama made clear today his stance on this matter: surveillance is okay, with FISA oversight.

We wanted an election season of substance. We're not going to get one. Both election campaigns this year have failed to bring the issues to the foreground, instead seeming to hang back and collect supporters who become surrogate attack dogs. The candidates can then "renounce" their views or at least pretend to be outraged, but are protected from scrutiny because they actually have said nothing at all.
So nationofcriminals.com is doing it's best to bring the policy debate to the front. Since the candidates won't debate, we'll lay their policies next to each other and see what we get.
